With names of countries, use :
-au for in or to with singular masculine names beginning with a consonant:
au Congo, au Canada, au Maroc, au Mexique ...
Ex: Je vais au Canada. (I'm going to Canada.)
Je vis au Mexique. (I live in Mexico.)
-aux for in or to with plural names:
aux Philippines, aux Etats-Unis...
Ex: Etes-vous déjà allé aux Etats-Unis ?
(Have you been to the United States?)
But use:
en for in or to
with feminine singular names beginning with a consonant:
la France: en France
Ex: Je vais en France. (I'm going to France.)
with feminine singular names beginning with a vowel:
l'Egypte: en Egypte
Ex: Je vis en Egypte . (I live in Egypt.)
and with masculine singular names of countries beginning with a vowel:
l'Afghanistan: en Afghanistan...
Ex: Etes-vous déjà allé en Afghanistan?
(Have you been to Afghanistan?)
