The indefinite articles ( un, une, des) generally have the same uses as the English indefinite articles a or an. They precede a common noun which is: -indefinite: Un enfant joue. (A child is playing.) -indeterminate: Des livres sont sur la table. (Books are on the table.) Notice that:
- The indefinite articles agree in gender with the singular noun:
Example: Un garçon. (A boy: Masculine) Une fille. (A girl: Feminine)
- The indefinite articles agree in number but no in gender with the plural noun:
Example: Des garçons et des filles. (Boys and girls.)
- The indefinite article un or une can be a numeral adjective as the English word one:
Example: J'ai un garçon et deux filles. I have one (or a) boy and two girls.
