How to express the time in French?: (1)Depuis(since, for), il y a (ago)

Use Examples
Depuis (=since, for) to express the duration:
  • Il est en France depuis le mois de mars.
    Duration= He's been in France since March and now he still is in France
  • J'attends depuis dix heures.
    Duration = I'm been waiting since 10 am and I'm still waiting.
Il y a (=ago) to talk about a finished action that happened in the past
  • Il y a une heure, il pleuvait.
    A finished action: It was raining one hour ago and now it doesn't rain any more.
  • Il est venu ici il y a longtemps.
    A finished action: He came here a long time ago.
